Test Code GI-PCR Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel by PCR

Important Note

NOTE: The "GI-PCR" replaces the following tests at the AVH Laboratory; these tests are no longer available separately:

Stool Culture

Yersinia Culture

Ova and Parasites*

Rotavirus

Campylobacter Screen

If the AVH Lab receives an order for any of the tests listed above the GI Panel by PCR will be performed instead.

* 'Ova and Parasites' testing can still be ordered as "OPCOMP" (O&P,Comprehensive), which will be sent to Mayo Medical Laboratories.  Expect a 3-5 day delay before results are available.

Infectious

Specimen Requirements

Stool Specimen Collection – Stool specimens should be collected in Cary Blair transport media according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Minimum Sample Volume - 200 μL of sample is required for testing.

Transport and Storage - Specimens should be processed and tested as soon as possible, though they may be stored at room temperature or under refrigeration for up to four days.

Reference Values

Not detected.

The FilmArray GI Panel is indicated as an aid in the diagnosis of specific agents of gastrointestinal illness (see list below) and results are meant to be used in conjunction with other clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological data. Positive results do not rule out co-infection with organisms not included in the FilmArray GI Panel. The agent detected may not be the definite cause of the disease.
