Platelet Aggregation

Note:  Due to the critical timing for testing after blood is drawn, patient must present to the Aspen Valley Hospital Laboratory for testing as an outpatient. Specimen cannot be drawn in a physician’s office.

Physician Office Specimen Requirements

EDTA and sodium citrate whole blood are required for this test.

 

EDTA Whole Blood

Container/Tube:  Lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s)

Specimen:  4.5 mL (minimum volume:  2 mL) of EDTA whole blood
Transport Temperature:  Ambient

Collection Instructions:

Note:  1. Indicate EDTA whole blood on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (EDTA whole blood).

 

Sodium Citrate Whole Blood

Container/Tube:  Light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube(s)

Specimen:  4.5 mL (minimum volume:  2 mL) of sodium citrate whole blood
Transport Temperature:  Ambient

Collection Instructions:

Note:  1. Indicate sodium citrate whole blood on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (sodium citrate whole blood).

Reference Values

Platelet function epinephrine:  82-150 seconds

Platelet function Adenine di-Phosphate (ADP):  62-100 seconds

An interpretive report will accompany all platelet function testing.
