Test Code UC Culture, Urine
Methodology
Conventional Culture TechniqueNote: Organism identification and antibiotic sensitivities (minimum inhibitory concentration) will be performed at an additional charge based on specimen type:
Suprapubic aspirate: any growth
Catheterized specimen: ≥10,000 Colony Forming Unit (CFU) and only 1 colony type
“Clean-catch” midstream: ≥100,000 CFU with 1 or 2 colony types
50,000-100,000 CFU of 1 colony type
Performing Laboratory
Aspen Valley HospitalSpecimen Requirements
Specimen must arrive within ≤12 hours of collection.
Give patient clear and detailed instructions for a “clean-catch” specimen.
1. Aseptically collect 5 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL) from a catheterized urine, “clean-catch” midstream urine, or suprapubic aspirate urine in a screw-capped, sterile container. (Specimen submitted in non-sterile container, specimen delayed >12 hours or stored at ambient temperature >30 minutes [unless preserved in BD urine preservative tube] is not acceptable.)
2. Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen (catheterized, “clean-catch” midstream, or suprapubic aspirate urine).
3. Send specimen refrigerated.
