Methodology

Conventional Culture Technique

Note:  Organism identification and antibiotic sensitivities (minimum inhibitory concentration) will be performed at an additional charge based on specimen type:

Suprapubic aspirate:  any growth

Catheterized specimen:  ≥10,000 Colony Forming Unit (CFU) and only 1 colony type

“Clean-catch” midstream:  ≥100,000 CFU with 1 or 2 colony types

50,000-100,000 CFU of 1 colony type

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within ≤12 hours of collection.

 

Give patient clear and detailed instructions for a “clean-catch” specimen.

1. Aseptically collect 5 mL (minimum volume:  0.5 mL) from a catheterized urine, “clean-catch” midstream urine, or suprapubic aspirate urine in a screw-capped, sterile container. (Specimen submitted in non-sterile container, specimen delayed >12 hours or stored at ambient temperature >30 minutes [unless preserved in BD urine preservative tube] is not acceptable.)

2. Label specimen with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen (catheterized, “clean-catch” midstream, or suprapubic aspirate urine).  

3. Send specimen refrigerated.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note:  1. Collect before start of antibiotic therapy whenever possible.

2. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
